17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2023: The Nation will celebrate the 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2023 in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) from 8 to 10 January 2023. The theme for Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PWD) 2023 is “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal”. Pravasi Bharatiya Day or NRI Day is observed on 9th January every year to mark the day when Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa to India in 1915. Special Guest for this year’s PWD will be Mr. Chandrikaprasad Santokhi (President of Suriname).

17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2023: Key Highlights

  • The 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas will see participants from 73 countries.
  • PBD Convention will have three segments. On 08 January 2023, the inauguration of the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Youth.
  • On 09 January 2023, the PBD Convention will be inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra
  • Chief Guest Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali (President of Guyana) and the Special Guest of Honour, Mr. Chandrikaprasad Santokhi (President of the Republic of Suriname) will also address the event.
  • A Postal Stamp “Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen” will be released to highlight the importance of safe, legal, orderly and skilled migration.
  • PM Modi will also inaugurate  the first-ever digital PBD Exhibition on theme “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav- Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle” to showcase the contribution of the Indian freedom fighters in India’s Independence.
  • On last day of event i.e. on 10 January 2023, The President of India Smt. Draupadi Murmu will give Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards for 2023 to the Indian members and their achievements in India as well as in abroad.

17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2023: History

  • The decision to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was taken in the recommendations of the committee set up by the Indian Government under the chairmanship of L. M. Singhvi.
  • The then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, received the report of the Committee on 8 January 2002, and announced that the 9th of January will be celebrated as “Pravasi Bharatiya Day”.
  • The day was chosen to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa  to Mumbai (India) on 9 January 1915.
