FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023: 2-time World Champions Germany defeat Belgium 5-4 in penalty shootout to win their 3rd title in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 after both the teams ended in a 3-3 draw. This was the 15th edition of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup held in Odisha (India) from 13-29 January 2023. The tournament was held at two venues the Kalinga Stadium and the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. With this win, the Germany moved to the World No. 1 spot in the  Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup ranking.

FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023: Indian team in the Tournament

  • Indian team led by the captain Harmanpreet Singh was placed in Pool D along with Spain, England and Wales in the World Cup.
  • They started their campaign on 13 January with a brilliant 2-0 win over Spain followed by a goalless draw against the England team and then winning 4-2 against the Wales to finish their pool matches.
  • Indian team was about to face against the New Zealand team in a crossover round. But despite a 2-0 lead till the 2nd quarter, the New Zealand fought hard and scored a 3-3 draw at the end. The Indian team lost the match in the Penalty shootout and they were out of the tournament.
  • India beat Japan in the final game to finished 9th position in the tournament.
  • Indian Hockey team is now moved to the 6th Position in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup ranking.
  • The Netherlands trashed Chile 14-0 making it the biggest marginal win in the history of the tournament.
  • The last time India hosted the Men’s Hockey World Cup was in 2018 in Odisha when Belgium became the World Champions.
