IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023: It was yet a memorable day for the Indian boxers as two Indian pugilists: Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain added two more gold in the iba women’s world boxing championships 2023 final in New Delhi on Sunday making India’s tally of 4 Gold medal. Nikhat Zareen won her second Women’s World Boxing Championships gold defeating Thi Tham Nguyen of Vietnam via a unanimous decision (5-0) in the 50 kg (light flyweight) category final. On the other side, The Tokyo Bronze medalist, Lovlina Borgohain added fourth gold to India’s tally by a thrilling win over Caitlin Anne Parker of Australia with 5-2 split decision win after a review in the 75 kg (Middleweight) category final.

Alongside Nikhat and Lovlina, 2022 Commonwealth Games medalist Nitu Ghanghas (48kg minimum weight category) and three-time Asian medalist Saweety Boora (81kg light heavyweight category) were the other gold medalists for the nation.

IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023: Key Points

  • The 13th edition of the IBA Women’s Boxing Championship 2023 was held at the K.D Jadhav Indoor Hall, New Delhi, India from 15-26 March 2023.
  • The tournament witnessed the participation of 324 boxers, including several Olympic medallists, from 65 countries fighting for the titles in the 12 weight categories with a prize money of INR 20 crores.
  • Nitu Ghanghas, two-time World Youth champion clinched the first Gold after beating the two-time Asian bronze medalist Lutsaikhan Altansetseg of Mongolia 5-0 in the 48-kg final . Second gold came from Saweety Boora, The light heavyweight boxer beating her Chinese opponent Wang Lina by points (4-3) in the 81-kg finals
  • Nikhat Zareen became only the second Indian female pugilist to win two golds at the World Championships alongside the boxing legend Mary Kom who has claimed a record six gold medals in the competition.
  • Indian boxers finished off an outstanding campaign with the highest gold medals (4) at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship.
  • This is the second time in history that India have won four gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships.   • The first edition of the Women’s World Boxing Championships was held in 2001 and hosted by Scranton in the US state of Pennsylvania.
  • Till date, Indian boxing legend M.C Mary Kom is the most successful in the tournament winning a record 6 times multiple gold medals.
