India named to chair International Sugar Organization for 2024: According to the Press release by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, India named to Chair “International Sugar Organization” for the year 2024. The announcement came during the 63rd Council Meeting of the ISO held in London highlighting India’s power in the worldwide sugar. India was led by the Food Secretary, Government of India, Mr. Sanjeev Chopra.

India looks for help and collaboration from all part nations and might want to focus on bringing all member countries together to adopt practices in Sugarcane cultivation, sugar and better usage of by-products.

Worldwide Effect of Indian Sugar Trends

  • India has been the largest consumer and second largest producer of sugar in the world. With about 15 per cent share in global sugar consumption and about 20 per cent of sugar production.
  • Brazil is the leading country in the Western Hemisphere and India is the leading country in the Eastern Hemisphere for sugar market.
  • Indian sugar industry has come a long way in modernization and expansion as well as in diversification to exploitation of potential of its by-products to generate additional revenue streams to make the whole business model both sustainable and profitable.
  • Top Sugarcane producing states in India are Uttar Pradesh> Maharashtra> Karnataka.
  • According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, India produces more than 5,000 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) of Sugarcane in 2021-22.

  • Indian Sugar Organization (ISO) is a unique intergovernmental organization established on 3 December 1968 by the International Sugar Agreement. Its headquarter is in London.
  • ISO was established as the body responsible for the administration of the various aspects of sugar such as production, distribution etc. at the global level.
  • The ISO has about 90 countries as its members.
