Koustav Chatterjee becomes 78th GM of India: The 19-year old boy from Kolkata Koustav Chatterjee r became the 78th Chess Grandmaster of India in MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship in New Delhi on Saturday. Koustav becomes the 10th Grandmaster from West Bengal. Koustav has managed his chess and studies well on his journey from IM to GM title.

  • As of 1 January 2023, there are now 78 chess Grandmasters (GMs) in India, with a 19-year-old Kolkata boy achieving his last feet When he forced GM Mitrabha Guha to a draw on Saturday in the 59th National Chess Championships in Delhi.
  • Koustav Chatterjee joins the ranks of Dibyendu Barua, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Sandipan Chanda, Neelotpal Das, Deep Sengupta, Saptarshi Chowdhury, Diptayan Ghosh, Saptarshi Roy, and Mitrabha Guha as the 10th Grand Master (GM) from the state of West Bengal.
  • India’s first Grandmaster was Viswanathan Anand, who achieved this title at the 14 years of age in 1988.
  • Grandmaster (GM) is the highest title awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to chess players, with the exception of the World Champion.
