Nation Celebrates National Youth Day on 12 January: Every year on 12th of January, the nation celebrates National Youth Day (NYD) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. This year will be the 26th edition of NYD. The theme for NYD 2023 is “Vikshit Yuva, Vikshit Bharat”(Developed Youth – Developed India)”. On this occasion, the Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs in collaboration with Karnataka govt. has decided to organize the 26th “National Youth Festival” from 12-16 January 2023 in Hubbali-Dharwad (Karnataka). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate this event.

Nation Celebrates National Youth Day on 12 January: History

  • It was the decision of Indian Government taken in 1984 to celebrate the birthday of Swami Vivekanand.
  • Since then the day has been celebrate as National Youth Day on 12 January across the nation.
  • The 1st edition of the “National Youth Day was observed on 12 January 1985.
  • The Government of India quoted that ‘the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth Day.

About Swami Vivekanand

  • Narendranath Dutt also known as Swami Vivekanand was born on 12th January 1863 in Kolkata.
  • He was a philosopher, activist, social reformer, and thinker. He was a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 in Belur (Kolkata)
  • He also represented India in the first Parliament of Religion held in Chicago (U.S.) in 1893.
  • He published 2 papers namely 1) Prabudha Bharat (in English) & 2) Udbodhana (in Bengali).
  • He preached the Doctrine of Service which he defined as the service of all creatures.
  • He died on 4th July 1902.
