South East Asia's 1st Night Sky Sanctuary to come up in Ladakh

South East Asia’s 1st Night Sky Sanctuary to come up in Ladakh : According to the Union Minister of Science and Technology, Atomic Energy and Space Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ladakh will soon have South East Asia’s 1st “Night Sky Sanctuary” at Henle village as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. The Dark Sky Reserve will host a number of Optical, Infrared and gamma-ray telescopes. This will attract tourists from around the world and will also boost local tourism and Indian economy, Mr. Singh said at the Ladakh pride exhibition organised in New Delhi.

The Minister informed that the sanctuary is being set up with the help of Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru which is affiliated to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Dark Sky Reserve

  • The Dark Sky Reserve is spread over 1,073 kilometres in the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • It is an area which has minimum or no light pollution. Light pollution refers to the excess amount of artificial light at night which endangers the ecosystem by harming the animals who lives depending on the dark.
  • This reserve is very close to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, the world’s second-highest optical telescope. at Hanley of about 4500 metres.
  • The Minister informed that the sanctuary is being set up with the help of Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru which is affiliated to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. He also appreciated the Lt. Governor of Ladakh, Brig.(Retd) B.D Mishra for his contribution to this project.
