South India’s 1st Industrial Corridor Project: During the recent visit to South India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 6, 2023 laid the foundation stone of South India’s first “Industrial Corridor project” of the scheme called “Tumakuru Industrial Township” in Tumakuru (Karnataka). The project is spread over 8500 acres of land and is launched under the Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) project. The CBIC project includes the development of industrial townships at 3 nodes: Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Tumakuru (Karnataka) and Ponneri (Tamil Nadu).

South India’s 1st Industrial Corridor Project: Key Points

  • Addressing the gathering during the occasion, the Prime Minister said that The Tumakuru Industrial Township has been planned in line with the prime focus of PM-GatiShakti scheme to ensure last mile multimodal connectivity to the economic zone.
  • The multi-modal connectivity ecosystem will ensure a seamless movement of raw material and finished goods.
  • He also said that the development of the CBIC project will be a major boost in improving the connectivity in the region and will promote significant Industrial growth.
  • The Phase-A of the project is expected to generate employment for more than 88,000 people and attract investment of around Rs 7,000 crore over a period of 5-6 years.
  • The Tumakuru Industrial Township project and the Industrial Corridor Programme at large will contribute to futuristic and inclusive growth of the country with the vision of the Government for ‘Make in India, Make for the World’. South India’s 1st Industrial Corridor Project

About PM GatiShakti Scheme

  • In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity with the aim of coordinated planning and execution of infrastructure projects to reduce logistics costs.
  • Gati Shakti is a digital platform that will bring 16 ministries and departments of the Government of India together and that includes the Railways and the Roadways also
  • PM Gat Shakti will incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various Ministries and State Governments like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, Inland Waterways, dry/land ports, UDAN etc. Economic Zones like textile clusters, pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronic parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, agri zones will be covered to improve connectivity & make Indian businesses more competitive
  • Under GatiShakti scheme, the Government of India on developing 11 Industrial Corridors and 2 Defence Corridors- one in Tamil Nadu and other in Uttar Pradesh.
